The Black's Insight 105 is a re-branded Samsung AF Zoom 105S/11050. (Black's was a chain of camera shops in Canada that operated from 1930 until 2015). The Insight 105 is an advanced 35mm point-and-shoot from the 1990s. This curiously overlooked gem is one of our favourite cameras from its era.

The Insight 105 features a 38-105mm lens that's very sharp for a zoom point-and-shoot. It was a fairly expensive camera when new (MSRP of the Samsung version was listed as $499USD in Popular Photography) and accordingly has deluxe features like: 48 AF zones; a 40cm 'super macro' mode; multiple exposure capability; automated interval shooting; and support for a very wide range of films (ISO 25-3200). The original box, case and user manual included.

Battery information

This camera requires two CR123 batteries (available as an option).

The manual doesn't give a battery life estimate but notes then the battery icon on the LCD changes to show depletion, there should be capacity for about 3 more rolls of film. The manual also notes that cold weather can cause temporary battery exhaustion (where the batteries will start working again when they warm up).

The Pentax Zoom 105 (a comparable camera that uses the same batteries) gives an estimated battery life of 30 24-exposure rolls of film if the flash is used 50% of the time.

Condition Notes

This camera was tested with batteries and a roll of film (the film was not developed). All modes are working correctly. The camera's true film-plane focus accuracy was verified on an auto-collimator and its auto-exposure was tested with a shutter tester and calibrated light source. The camera is in good cosmetic condition (see photos). The included box and user manual show some wear (see photos).
