The Hanimex 35ES is a very easy to use mechanical 35mm film camera from the early 1980s. It features a 33mm lens, a thumbwheel manual film advance, three selectable film speeds, and a built-in flash that can be switched on or off. It's a fixed-focus design where subjects from about 1.2 metres to infinity should be in focus.

We find the 35ES to be a standout of the 1980s 'cheapie' point-and-shoot genre. It's very small and offers a measure of exposure control with its film speed speed selector (which actually varies the aperture). And we really like the look of the photos it produces.

For more technically oriented users: we found (when testing at ISO 100), the ISO 100 setting gave a ~EV12.5 exposure; ISO 200 gave ~EV13.5; and EV 400 gave ~ EV14.5. The shutter speed is approximately 1/125 seconds.

For less technically oriented users, just use color negative film, set the film speed on the camera to match the film you're using. And switch on the flash unless you're outdoors in daylight conditions.
