The circa 1986 Canon Sure Shot Tele (also called the Autoboy Tele and Top Twin) was the company's first dual focal lenght 35mm length point-and-shoots. A button lets you switch between a slightly wide view (40mm f/2.8; 4 elements in 3 groups) and a portrait/telephoto view (70mm f/4.9; 7 elements in 6 groups). It also features a very interesting 'soft focus' designed for flattering 'ethereal' portraits in tele mode.

We're big fans of dual focal length compacts (Minolta, Olympus, Fuji, and Nikon also made really nice models) and find it unfortunate they were crowded out of the market by zoom designs. If you don't mind a larger camera, we feel this is a standout point-and-shoot.

Battery information

The Sure Shot tele requires a 2CR5 lithium battery (available as an option).

Battery life: About 5 years or 40 rolls of 24 exposure film
(using flash 30% of the time/based on Canon's standardtest method.)

Condition notes

We verified all camera features are working correctly. We verified its film plane focus on an autocollimator and confirmed its autoexposure using a calibrated light source and a shutter tester. This camera is in very good cosmetic condition (see photos) with the most noteworthy flaw being that the rubber eye was removed by the original owner.
